CALEGHÈRI

In Venice the special shoes for the gondoliers are made by shoemakers called “Calegheri”.

The “gondoliers’ shoe” has a sole with a soft and resistant rubber, made for those who spend many hours standing, and an insole with arch in leather. Including cutting, setting and finishing it takes ten hours to complete a pair of shoes, handmade and made to measure.

Among the Venetian trades, the caleghèri, associated with cobblers (zavattèri), are present with their Capitolare already in 1271. From caleghèr the Venetian toponymy presents the bridge, the campiello, the branch.
